If you are uninsured or are not using health insurance to pay for care, you generally have the right to receive a written Good Faith Estimate of expected charges when you request one or schedule care at least three business days in advance.
When you receive an estimate
- For care scheduled 3–9 business days ahead, the estimate is generally due within one business day after scheduling.
- For care scheduled at least 10 business days ahead, it is generally due within three business days after scheduling.
- If you request an estimate before scheduling, it is generally due within three business days of the request.
What it means
An estimate describes expected charges based on the care reasonably anticipated at that time. It is not a contract requiring you to receive care, and unexpected services may affect actual charges. Ask the practice about changes in the planned service, frequency or assessment scope. Keep a copy of your estimate and bills.
If your bill is higher
You may be eligible for the federal patient-provider dispute resolution process if a provider’s bill is at least $400 more than that provider’s estimate. The process generally must be started within 120 calendar days of the initial bill. You may also ask the practice to explain or review the charges.
Request an estimate
Use our contact page to request a Good Faith Estimate without submitting clinical details. Bahali Psychology is self-pay and does not bill insurance directly. A superbill does not guarantee reimbursement.
